Home in Columbus Georgia Valley area.
Columbus GA Realtor: The Valley area is a very unique part of the South that we are all very proud of. Did you know that Columbus Georgia once was the site of a Creek Indian Village, is one of the few cities in the United States to be planned in advance of its founding. It was established in 1828 as a trading post to strengthen the western border of Georgia, Columbus was the last "frontier town" of the original Thirteen Colonies. There is a Wild history just across the Chattahoochee from Columbus Ga , just across from Lake Harding & Lake Oliver in Phenix City Alabama, Phenix City was notorious during the 1940s and 1950s as being a haven for organized crime, prostitution, and gambling. As a result, the city had a negative reputation, and many people still associate this legacy with Phenix City. The Tragedy and the Triumph of Phenix City, Alabama by Margaret Ann Barnes chronicles these events. Which led to the small town to be known as "Sin City, USA". In 1955, it won the All-America City Award from the National Municipal League.
Founded in 1918, Fort Benning became home of the United States Army Infantry School, Ranger School and Airborne School. The Fort is located six miles southeast of Columbus, Ga., and extends into east-central Alabama. It includes 182,000 acres of river valley and rolling terrain. The climate and terrain are well-suited for infantry training and support missions. Fort Benning also includes Lawson Army Airfield & Camp Darby. The second part of the Benning is conducted at nearby Camp William O. Darby. The emphasis at Camp Darby is on the instruction in and execution of squad combat patrol operations. The Ranger student receives instruction on boxing, fieldcraft training, executes the Darby Queen Obstacle Course and learns the fundamentals of patrolling, the warning order/operations order format and communications. The fundamentals of combat patrol operations include battle drills, ambush and reconnaissance patrols , enter/clear a room, airborne operations, and air assault operations. This phase uses the crawl technique during the FTX, which allows the student to practice the principles and techniques that enables the patrol to successfully conduct reconnaissance and ambush patrol missions. The Ranger student must then demonstrate his expertise through a series of cadre and student led tactical patrol operations. As a result, the Ranger student gains tactical and technical proficiency, confidence in himself and prepares to move to the next phase of the course--the Mountain Phase. Following the Benning Phase students are transported to Camp Frank D. Merrill, Dahlonega, Ga.
I am a U.S.Army Infantry Veteran "11H". I did my Basic Training here at Ft Benning back in the early 80's. Little did I know then that The Little Grand Canyon "Providence Canyon" was just to the southeast of Ft Benning Ga or that the Chattahoochee river ran through here dividing Georgia from Alabama. "The Valley" has lakes like West Point Lake to Lake Eufaula, Lake Harding, Goat Rock & Lake Oliver on both the Alabama & Georgia side. Pemberton, he was the pharmacist who concocted the original (and still secret) formula for Coca-Cola syrup. He died in 1888, his grave can be viewed in Linwood Cemetery in one of the older sections of town in Columbus Ga. Pemberton fought for the Confederacy in the War Between the States along with 200 other cemetery residents.
